Wakin
"Japanese Goldfish" are the common type of
goldfish found in Japan. They are still uncommon within
the USA but have become more prevalent within the past
few years. Since they are not easy to acquire they have
become a highly sought after variety of goldfish among
enthusiasts.
Wakins
will thrive best in ponds but can be kept in an aquarium
with a minimum size between 20-30 gallons.
Wakins
are very hardy and can be over wintered in a pond as long
as there is a whole left in the ice. It is also
recommended having the pond depth be deeper than the
freezing level for your area unless they are housed inside
during the winter.
Wakins
are community fish and make suitable companions with other
pond fish such as Koi, Comets and Shubunkins. Although
Wakins are not aggressive, housing them with the more
delicate varieties of goldfish such as the Oranda, Black
Moor, and Bubble Eye is not recommended.
We highly
recommend keeping the enjoyable Wakin whether your a
beginner or advanced aquarist.
